Phasers that stun, in real life.

An entry in the Journal of the American Chemical Society talks about how scientists have been able to build a gun that uses electromagnetic energy to stun really small worms.
Though, it would seem as if there's still some work to be done, since the article mentions this:
Although some of the worms died, most of them lived through the process.
Now, I wonder how this technology scales up. I have a feeling that the range of "stun" is fairly limited… you'll either be doing nothing to your enemy or burning holes through their chest. Then again, maybe research in phaser technology is much more worthwhile than lasers… but none are a match to the ultimate weapon.
